Indirecte orders en verzoeken

Als we een order of verzoek willen navertellen, kunnen we een werkwoord als 'tell' gebruiken met een to-bijzin: He told me to go away. De constructie is werkwoord + meewerkend voorwerp + to-bijzin. Het meewerkend voorwerp is de persoon waartegen gesproken wordt. Andere werkwoorden die gebruikt worden om orders en verzoeken op deze manier na te vertellen zijn: command, order, warn, ask, advise, invite, beg, teach & forbid.

Verzoeken om voorwerpen

Verzoeken om voorwerpen worden naverteld met gebruik van de constructie "asked for" + voorwerp.

Suggesties

Suggesties worden het meest naverteld door middel van de werkwoorden suggest, insist, recommend, demand, request en propose, gevolgd door een dat-bijzin. 'That' en 'should' zijn optioneel in deze bijzinnen, zoals aangetoond in de eerste twee voorbeelden hieronder. Let wel dat suggest, recommend en propose ook gevolgd kunnen worden door een gerundium teneinde het meewerkend voorwerp (degene voor wie de suggestie bestemd is) weg te laten en op die manier de suggestie beleefder te maken. Het gebruik van de gerundium wordt aangetoond in het vierde en vijfde voorbeeld hieronder.
